The story of Lysistrata was written by Aristophanes, it takes place in 411 BC during the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. It argues not so much for pacifism as for the idea that the states ought not be fighting one another but combining their forces to rule Greece. In the play, this is accomplished when the women of the different states show off their bodies and deprive their husbands of sex until they stop fighting. The new version by Gilbert Seldes was illustrated with six etchings by Pablo Picasso published in 1934. Reference: Bloch 269
